About C. Yvonne Washington |
|
My mother Margaret Washington always worked at the polls during the elections. She was a stay-at-home mom and active at our school as a Room Mother and member of the PTA. Being involved in our education (I have two siblings) was her way of protecting and guiding us. Working the polls was something that she became passionate about like most African-Americans during the Civil Rights movement. She later ran for school board and served as Chair of the Democratic Women during the 70's when I was in High School.

Washington said her work experiences have covered everything from day care to elder care. After earning associate's and bachelor's degrees from Indiana University East with educational focus on humanities, behavioral science and communications, she worked at IU East's Center for Health Promotion. Washington also has been a trainer and career consultant with WorkOne Beth Harrick, the county's Democratic Party chair in a news release announcing Washington's candidacy, "At WorkOne she provided training, coaching and referrals to help her clients gain skills and employment. She knows and loves this community, and wants to leverage her talents to advance the welfare and well-being of its residents.” At IU East, Washington said she was the first point of contact for individuals in crisis, and she worked at WorkOne during the Visteon shutdown. She said she helped Visteon employees who felt betrayed and disappointed navigate their feelings and take their next steps. Washington told of a person in crisis who came to her at IU East and told her that the next day might be too late to receive counseling, which she ensured was immediately provided. "I had to develop a keen sense of discernment as to how to provide services," she said. -Mike Emery, Richmond Palladium-Item |
